Anyone Need a Tow?

One night I was headed out with some friends to grab some pizza. Going out for pizza might not sound like it would be a long drive, but in this case we were going for the best pizza in town, which takes around 45 minutes to an hour to get to. As I'm exiting the highway, my friend in the passenger seat remarks that my car is "smoking." To make a long story short, one of the radiator hose connections (it was made of plastic) had cracked, allowing most all of the coolant to escape and causing my car to overheat. I figured with the rate of coolant loss, the best option would be to have my car towed. I should first mention that I belong to an automobile club that I have been with for a few years and still really like, so for that reason, the particular company shall remain un-named (I suspect part of the problem was not a problem with the automobile club). We ended up meeting the other people we were going to eat pizza with and they gave us a ride to the pizza place (I didn't try driving my car to the pizza place, I just found a parking lot near the exit ramp). From my past experiences, I know that sometimes it can take a while for the tow truck to arrive, so I decide to run outside while waiting for the pizza to call the automobile club (known as "AC" from here on) to get an idea of the wait time. I tell the operator my situation and she says that I shouldn't have a problem finishing my pizza before the tow truck arrives at my car, so I go ahead and schedule the tow and go back in to eat. About five minutes after hanging up, I get a call from the towing company telling me they have a guy enroute and they should be there in about 10-15 minutes. I tell the gentleman from the towing company that we had just ordered our food and that the lady from the AC said that it would be a while before the truck got there. Obviously she was wrong, but I asked the guy from the towing company if they could delay their driver until about 9pm (it was probably 7:30 or so at the time I called). I figure an hour and a half would be plenty of time to eat and make it back to my car. The guy from the towing company tells me that he's not sure if he'll be able to do that since the AC sent them the work order, but he said he'd call up the AC and see what he can do. About two minutes later, a lady from the AC calls and tells me that they're going to go ahead and put the call on hold and to call back when I'm about a half hour away from getting back to my car. At that time, she states, they'll reinstate the service call and send a truck. That sounds fine to me and I tell them "OK." Fast forward to about 9pm. We're about done eating, so I call up the AC again to have them re-activate the service call. I should mention that for some reason, I was on hold for like 8 minutes before I was hung up on. I'm not sure exactly why, as they always answer the call right away, so maybe lines got crossed or something. Anyway, I called back, they answered right away, and I told the operator my situation and that I'm ready to head back to my car. The operator goes ahead and says that the service call is active again and that a truck should be there shortly. About 2 minutes after I hang up, we all make our way to the car so we can pile in and drive back to my car to wait. As soon as I sit down in the car, my phone rings and the guy from the towing company is on the other end. He asks me where I am and tells me that he's had a driver waiting there for about 30 minutes already because I said it would be about 9:00 before I got there. I told him the situation, how the AC said they would put the call on hold and that I should call them back about 30 minutes prior to my being ready. He said he would tell the driver and that he should still be there when I got there. Well, that was great for me, as I wouldn't have to wait at all, but I felt bad for making the guy wait so long. We make the short drive over to my car and luckily the driver was still there waiting...and he was not happy. If you have ever seen the move "Popeye" starring Robin Williams, imagine the guy who plays Bluto in the movie, only bald and working as a tow truck driver. Even if you've only seen the cartoons, you know Bluto is a BIG guy, and mean looking. I think this is who my tow truck driver was...and he seemed pissed...definitely not a guy I'd want to have mad at me. I walk up to him in his truck, apologize, and tell him the situation, and he just kinda barks back at me "So are you going to do this or not?" It seemed like a weird question. I mean, I have a car, I need it towed, and he was there, but I think down inside he was hoping I'd say no so he could go home. At any rate, I tell him that I still need the tow and so he goes ahead and begins hooking the car up. In the mean time, I tell him that I need to call the AC, as I just placed another service call to have my car towed and I think that they were sending two trucks for my car. So, I call the AC, tell them the situation, and ask them to just go ahead and cancel the service call. The operator seems slightly confused at first, but eventually grasps the idea and runs with it. The operator says that they're going ahead and cancelling it and that is that...or so I thought. Well, a couple minutes later, while the tow truck driver is still hooking the car up, I get a call, I think it was from the AC, telling me a tow truck will be there in about 10 minutes. I tell them that that's great, but I already have a tow truck here from a previous call that the AC was supposed to cancel but apparently word never got all the way back to the towing company. They seemed confused, so I explain everything to them again, assure them it's ok, and tell them they can just cancel the most recent service call, as I'm already taken care of. I hang up, and that is that. By this time the tow truck driver has my car ready to go, so I bid farewell to my friends and thank them for the ride (the friends that rode with me ended up borrowing a parent's car to get home). I hop into the tow truck, Bluto kicks it into gear, and we head off. Well, about 10 minutes into my ride home, I get ANOTHER call on my cell phone. This time, it's the tow truck company again. I think it may have been a different company than the one that was presently towing my car. The operator from the towing company proceeds to ask me if they're at the right parking lot, as they have a truck there and they don't see anyone. Well, I go ahead and tell the operator the same story you've read up to this point. Once again, the operator seems somewhat confused. I guess being confused is a good sign, as it means the AC doesn't usually have this problem. At any rate, I tell them I'm already getting towed, assure them I'm ok, apologize for the inconvenience, and thank them for being so prompt. At this point, I think Bluto began to get less pissed off as he realized just how screwed up everything was. Now, this doesn't mean he wasn't pissed off, I mean, he was probably still more angry than I've ever been, but he at least started some small talk at this point. I felt kinda bad too, because not only did I make this driver wait for about 45 minutes, but it was probably a good 45 minute drive to drop off my car, and then he had that same drive ahead of him again on his return trip. I ended up giving him a tip and apologized for making him wait. Money seems to really turn things around sometimes, as it can make anyone a LOT happier than they were the moment before they had a wad of cash in their hand. Right before I gave him the tip, he was sitting up in the truck getting ready to leave. I asked him if he needed any refreshments or a bathroom or anything, he said he was ok, and then I stuck my hand out towards him with the money in it. At first he snapped at me "WHAT!?" I kinda motioned I had something for him, he realized what I was doing, and then he was happy. All in all, everything worked out. I got home, I didn't have to pay for tow, and I ended up getting the parts and fixing my car. Next time I'll just be sure to call the AC when I'm close to being ready instead of risking going through this same ordeal.
