Stupid Duct Cleaning Business
I got an ad in the mail with a coupon that said they would clean my ducts for $6 per vent or $79 for the whole house. We have 8 vents, so that's $48. But when I asked the guy if the main vent (intake vent or whatever) was included, he said that's an extra $30. Ok, so it's about $80 either way. Tax? Yes. On labor? Hmmm. Whatever. Ok. Let's do it. He opens the main intake vent, shines his flashlight in there and said he couldn't do it because there's rust and mold in there. So he adds up how much it would cost to also address the problems of rust and mold. $428! A far cry from $80! He really stressed the importance of getting it done right away before it got any worse. So I stressed the importance of him leaving my property right away before I forced him to do so. You see, my ducts are aluminum, which does not rust. Ok, it can get oxidized but that is not rust colored. What he showed me that he thought was rust was actually some red adhesive that was sprayed in there when the house was built. It was used to hold some things in place up there. So he lied about that. Also, the mold he mentioned...how can he tell? Doesn't that take some kind of chemical tests? He just looked at some clumps of dust and said it is mold. The guy earned the title King Stupid!
